Covid-19: Quick update 2020-03-25

The government has announced that commercial tenants who cannot pay their rent because of COVID-19 will be protected from eviction.

These measures will mean no business will automatically forfeit their lease and be forced out of their premises if they miss a payment up until 30 June. (Apparently there is the option for the government to extend this period if needed.)

They have said it is not a rental holiday and that all commercial tenants will still be liable for the rent during the period. They will, however, be protected from eviction if they are unable to pay rent.

No action will be required for you to take advantage of this.

In other news:

1) We are expecting government measures supporting the self employed to be announced by the end of this week, possibly tomorrow, so expect a bigger update soon.

2) HMRC have said that they're aiming to have the system for the government to pay 80% of employees wages ready by the end of April:

This is obviously slower than a lot of us would have hoped.
